-Vampirologist Takes Bite Out of 500-Year-Old Myth
-
RANDLEMAN, N.C. - Vampirologist Theresa Bane has written a haunting and informative guide to vampires that will keep fans and historians of the myth transfixed, just in time for Vlad the Impaler’s 576th birthday. The book, Actual Factual: Dracula, A Compendium of Vampires, is a nonfiction reference to the 900-plus different species of vampires that have struck fear into mankind since the earliest times.
-
"In every society that has ever existed, in every time period, there has been the vampire," states the author. "It's been about 300 years since anyone has attempted to collect and catalogue all of the legends in one source."
-
Set up much like a wilderness field guide for each vampiric creature, Actual Factual: Dracula offers much more. It features descriptions, methods of attack and defense, types of prey, and notes of interest for each entry, as well as a pronunciation key, list of aliases, etc. Each chapter heading is beautifully illustrated, and an index assists with cross-referencing.
-
Bane spent more than five years researching and writing this book. "I love the vampire myth and have since I was a child. I don't know why it called to me, but it did," she says. "I have, over the last 30-plus years, read everything that I could get my hands on to better understand the myth: sociology books, anthropology books, various types of historical references, you name it. And," she adds, "because of all the work, when the Discovery Channel featured me as an expert vampirologist for their documentary 'Twisted History: Vampires,' I felt thoroughly prepared."
-
The author, who grew up in the New York/New Jersey area, now resides in North Carolina. She is currently busy at work on the next book in the Actual Factual series, Actual Factual: Demons, A Grimoire of the Damned.
-
Actual Factual: Dracula, A Compendium of Vampires is published by NeDeo Press of Randleman, NC.
